My well-heeled sister-friend and I were chopping it up recently. I said, 'I keep trying to eat the world.'

'How so?' she said. 'I'm trying to plug my pain with everything: perfumes, pretty art and pricey mess I can't afford.' 'Laissez-faire consumerism ain't the cut you think it is, cutie,' she said. 'I could've hipped you to that noise for free. Enoughism is the real kick.'

I silently sipped my builder's tea, making a note of my sister-friend's £2000 tiger tooth Roberto Cavalli boots as she rested her feet on my rickety coffee table.
